MEET THE DOCTOR

Hi there! I'm Sonia.

I'm a board-certified, experienced internist with a background in nutrition. I've trained and worked at several elite institutions.  But what I really want you to know is that I'm more than a few fancy names on a resume.

I'm a mother to 1 dog (Sammy) and 1 human (Remi) who have brought me more joy (and more grey hair) than I ever could have imagined. I'm a wife to a pulmonary/critical care doctor (Harman), who has been tirelessly treating COVID In Houston since the start of the pandemic. I'm a daughter of immigrants who taught me the value of hard work & education and are living proof of the American dream.

But most importantly, I'm human too. I care deeply about my patients and I want them to know & feel that I am walking beside them on their journey, rather than giving orders from above. I too have struggled with finding time for myself (and not feeling guilty about it), saying "no" to the donut in the break room, juggling work with motherhood, and quieting my busy mind at the end of the day. I get it because I've been there, and I can help.

I approach medicine with humanity, compassion & creativity to help my patients live happier, healthier lives. I sincerely love what I do and I would be honored to be your doctor.

My Practice Style

I practice evidence-based medicine, which means I make decisions based on robust scientific data and I will NOT be selling you overpriced supplements, unhelpful tests or unproven treatments.. I believe in addressing root causes, rather than quick fixes. I often describe myself as a "minimalist" when it comes to medication. I take my prescribing privileges seriously. Whenever possible, I will counsel my patients on how to improve their health with diet & lifestyle changes.. I believe what we eat is the most important factor in determining our long-term health, which is why I completed a Masters in Human Nutrition and spend A LOT of time talking about it with my patients and basically anyone else who will listen!

Otherwise Unremarkable is a blog where I share writing inspired by all the uncharted, undocumented, between-the-lines aspects of medicine & life. I write essays, poetry, creative nonfiction and flash fiction. I've had the pleasure of honing my craft at SF Writer's Grotto in San Francisco as well as Inprint and Writespace in Houston.

In 2017, I founded an initiative aimed at addressing grief & burnout in healthcare settings through the use of mindful origami.

The idea of The Paper Cranes Project is simple – to use the act of folding a paper crane as an opportunity to reflect, to channel grief into a tangible product, and to honor and acknowledge the loss of a patient, but also to let it go in a way that feels human.
